We're at the start of Mester Street. We wait as the 51 tram rushes past us, revealing a large glass portal behind which hang these high-tech bike wonders and guys in mechanic outfits bustling around. We've arrived. This is Mesterbike & Coffee, a bike repair shop, bike store, and coffee shop—a community space where bike and coffee subcultures meet and intertwine. In designing the space, we consciously played with the idea of no sharp boundaries: the zones of the shop, the repair center, and the café seamlessly flow into each other. As you step in, you won't yet know if you'll bump into a pro cyclist or chat with an enthusiastic barista over a great coffee, or perhaps with the hobby biker girl from next door.
The founder, András Szép, and his wife are passionate cyclists who approached the KROKI Studio with specific interior design ideas. At Mesterbike, every tiny detail is carefully planned and tailored to specific needs.
From the street, the service area stands out first in an unusual way. In the practically arranged space, the most modern equipment is lined up, and there's nothing here they can't fix. The black steel and glass elements, along with the angular lines, emphasize the importance of work, yet the service's quality and appearance match the café and shop's chill, laid-back vibe. While your bike is being fixed, there's no need to go anywhere for a good coffee and company. The streamlined forms and built-in benches provide a comfy and friendly spot for chats and relaxation. You don't have to worry about the repairs getting too noisy either, as the lockable glass wall can separate the space without losing transparency. Sustainability was also a key consideration in the design process, like the recycled lamps that provide light.
Mesterbike & Coffee isn't just a repair shop and café: one of its main goals is to promote the cycling lifestyle! Besides that, it's a community space where you can catch afternoon events, get tips about biking, join cycling workshops, or even participate in group rides organized by the leaders. Alongside cycling activities, concerts, performances, and chats are also hosted here.
