“The station has an unconventional building, which is unique in the country. Its ornate neo-baroque exterior is due to the nearby Horthy mansion; the governor arrived at his castle in Kenderes by train, and the decorative façade was created in his honor.”
Kenderes railway station is located in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, on the northeastern edge of the inner area of Kenderes, along the Kál-Kápolna–Kisújszállás railway line. What makes the station unique is that its neo-baroque style building was inspired by the proximity of the nearby Horthy Mansion, and in 1931 a special waiting room for the governor was created for Miklós Horthy, who often visited here. The building is now under historic protection. MÁV completed a full renovation of the station between 2019 and 2020. The renovation was carried out based on the interior design plans of our studio. Subtle contemporary elements now harmoniously complement the original 1930s atmosphere.
Interesting facts:
According to local legends, there is a tunnel running under the station leading to the Horthy Mansion, but these have not been explored.
For railway history enthusiasts, there are exhibitions and thematic tours available in the building, showcasing Hungarian railway developments from between the two world wars.
